How to Measure Blinds and Shades

When measuring for a Blind or shade you need to first decide where the blind will be mounted. If the window has enough space in the inside recesses of the window you may want to hang the blind as an inside mount. This provides a clean professional look but will often allow a small amount of light around the edges. If your goal is to block as much light as possible you may want to consider mounting the blind outside the window opening. Doing so will allow the blind to overlap the edge of the window blocking the maximum amount of light.

Inside Mount Outside Mount

Measure inside mountMeasuring for Inside Mounts
When measuring for an inside mount keep in mind that not all windows are perfectly square. Because of this you will need to measure the window in several places to find the best measurement for your blind or shade. First, measure the full inside dimension across the top (where the head rail will be mounted), across the middle, and across the bottom of the window. Take the narrowest measurement of the three and this becomes the width of your blind or shade. Likewise, measure the inside dimension of the length of the window. Measure the right, center, and left lengths. Take the shortest measurement and this becomes the overall length of the blind or shade.

When ordering an inside mount blind or shade, give the exact width and length of the opening and indicate that it is an inside mount, we will add allowances to the product to allow it to fit inside the recess with its appropriate brackets.

Measuring for Outside Mounts
When there is not sufficient room on the inside recess of a window or where more light blocking capability is required, the blind must be mounted on the outside of the window recess. When measuring for an outside mount, you need to make the blind wider and longer than the opening of the window. This will allow a proper overlap on the wall and space for the mounting brackets to attach to the wall. First, measure the width of the window opening and add an additional 1 ½” to each side. Second, measure the length of the window opening and add another 1 ½” on the top and on the bottom of the window. Your final measurements should then be at least 3” wider and longer than the window opening.

Vertical Blinds
When measuring for a vertical blind on an outside mount you will need to provide at least 2” above the window to allow the slats to cover the window. If you would like the slats to stack completely off the window when the blind is opened you will have to figure a wider width to allow for stack space. Referr to the following chart or call 800-437-6488 for help in figuring stack space for vertical blinds.

Blinds and shades are ordered with the width dimension listed first and the length second in the following format: width X length. Always indicate if the blind is mounted outside the widow (outside brackets or ob) or inside the window (inside brackets or ib). For example, a mini blind fitting a window 48” wide and 54” long and mounted on the inside recess of the window, would be ordered in the following format: 1 mini blind 48 X 54 ib

If you are ordering blinds for multiple windows, they would be grouped according to size:
1 mini blind 34 X 48 ib
3 mini blinds 48 X 54 ib
2 mini blinds 24 X 24 ib
2 vertical blinds 78 X 84 ob
